"This book taught me a lot about how to write well! You can tell from his EXQUISITE choice of words that he just got out of high school or something, and he's really an inspiration to me! I hope to grow up and write good, or more good, as he does! I can't wait to start high school and begin my own writing adventure!" -Mary Jenkins, Age 12
"I hate this book." -Gerald Simmons, Ph.D, Age 34
"This was actually a very excellent example of how many young, inexperienced authors try to get their word out--failing miserably--through independent publishing companies. Perhaps, providing the young man(e.g. the author) had more talented writing skills and/or a more educated and knowledgeable outlook on the actual writing world, he would have more success. Unfortunately, he chose to publish a poorly-written novel on a poorly-respected independent publishing website." Nancy Piller, Age 22
I adore reviews.
The only thing that bothers me, is that these people didn't buy the book. Why the pirate scum, how dare they. >
This brings me to the point of, Independent publishers versus Established publishers. The only problem with the publishing world at this point, is that it's very difficult to get your foot in the door without something on your resume that sticks out. Unfortunately, I do not have anything in particular that sticks out to people that are looking for something 'unique' to bring them to the table. Aside from the fact that I can take criticism with a shrug and a smile, and that particular factor doesn't weigh much into the real world.
Independent publishers, while they may be poor in the first place - Lulu in particular is not the best place to get a start, yes the hypocrisy - are not always poor in the end. They are more likely to take a chance on you than a large established group like Randomhouse. Where as unestablished authors that don't have agents (which decent ones are near impossible to get at the early stages,) cannot get their foot into the door with a big company that certainly could make them famous and make them quite a great deal of money; an established author can easily get their foot in that door.
Most established authors went through independent publishing long before they went into the 'big time'. It's just a matter of preference, try for that big agent for as long as you can with your manuscript, live through getting ripped off, told off, lied too, manipulated, etc, or you can try and make it slowly but surely getting your name out their on your own. It's hard to do, but the hard road is usually the most satisfying I've found. To do something on your own, and by your own terms.
I'll always hold onto the altruistic point of view that a good story, no matter how badly written it may be, is still a good story. No matter how long it will take me to achieve what I want in life, I will still continue on the same path that I always have. I will write, and so will many other people, but I will write and I will write until my fingers are nothing but nubs. It's not like what talent I do have came naturally, after all.
Until I do make it, life will roll on, and I will continue on.
<3 all horrible (albeit fake) reviews.
